I decided to be adventurous, and asked some of my family members closest to me 5 simple (but telling) questions. Their answers are funny, raw, and loving. I strongly encourage my RP friends and family to ask these questions within your own household – it’s a great way to have a few laughs, and makes the discussion of visual impairment a little lighter! Enjoy!
1) How would you describe living in a house with a visually impaired person? Little Brother: Well I mean for the most part it’s good. But it can be distracting when you and dad run into stuff all the time… (Note: He took his words back after he said it ;) lol.) Mom: Well… it can be a bit chaotic at times. Maybe a little perplexing. Eh, even a bit worrisome… but most of all just funny. Some days make me go “AGHH!” and others make me giggle. Husband: Um… Can you repeat the question? I think it’s just normal...?
2) What’s different about our family versus an average family with no visual impairments? Little Brother: We don’t leave things laying around, and we put things back EXACTLY where they were found… at least we try… (an annoying look by him was given to me.) Mom: We like to visit bright places… and we pay attention to obstacles… but sometimes we forget to tell you about them haha! (Mhm!) And we play follow the leader/hide and seek a lot… I feel like I’m the master seeker most of the time… (She is.) Husband: Never leave your glass on the edge of the counter… ever. Oh, and always push your chair in!
3) Use one word to describe me: Little Brother: You’re um… (Me: Be honest!) … Clumsy! (We both started laughing – what can I say, it’s true!) Mom: You’re adept and proactive when it comes to handling your disability. Husband: (Without hesitation) Clumsy! (I proceeded to tell him that my brother said the EXACT same thing, and told him to choose a different answer haha) Well you are! But… I guess another word to describe you would be fearless. (Now that’s more like it!)
4) If you could snap your fingers, and make my eyes better, what’s the first thing you would take me to go do with you? Little Brother: I would want you to drive me places again, and walk into dark/dim rooms without needing a shoulder or a cane… actually when you can see again we should just burn the cane! (Hey, I agree with that!) Mom: We would all go star gazing in the mountains. (I agree!) Husband: Take you to buy your dream car (Aww! Better start saving now!)
5) What’s something you’ve seen me do that’s funny/embarrassing? Little Brother: It always cracks me up when I walk into a room and you don’t see me, so then I say something and it scares the hell out of you! (Yeah… I just love it when he does that… NOT!) Mom: You always confuse blankets on the couch with the dogs. It’s hilarious when you tell a blanket to “GET DOWN!” (I’ve done this multiple times… She’s right!) Husband: One time when we went in for a kiss, you missed my mouth and kissed my nose instead because you couldn’t see very well. I’m not going to lie, it was pretty funny. (Yeah ok, that was pretty funny…)
