Time To Educate: What's A Cane?

I think it's time for a little educational segment on the use of a tool most blind/visually impaired individuals use! ;) The picture below is of an object called a "cane." The function of this white/red stick is to help an individual get around when their eyes don't function properly.

Now that we know it's purpose, let's discuss who uses it. Believe it or not you DO NOT have to be blind to use it. "WHAT?!" I know... It's shocking right? But it's true. There are numerous reasons why an individual who still has vision left might be using a seeing eye cane.

Confused? Let's get personal. As many of you know, both my dad and I have a genetic condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa that currently leaves us legally blind, progressing continually to full blindness. "How do you even deal?!" Let me explain. Yes it's depressing to think about, yes its tough to deal with, and yes it's currently incurable, BUT these were the cards we were dealt, so we make the most of it -- Roll the bones! #RUSH

ANYWAY... I have something to say, and I think I speak for a lot of visually impaired people when I say this: Society and the standards that have been set over this damn cane/disability can honestly be more upsetting than the disease itself. When I use my white cane, I'm not faking it. I'm letting you know that I can't see well, if at all... and unless you want me to run into you at full force, I would suggest you move. Not because I'm an asshole and feel like I own the cheese aisle, but because I simply don't see you... AND if I do run into you, and apologize profusely for it, the least you could do is say "No worries" instead of looking at me with a blank "What the hell is your problem" stare.

Disabilities are all around us. Everyone is fighting their own battle. Be kind. Be understanding. Nothing is worse than having a disability, and being treated differently because of it.

For those who are blind/visually impaired, hold your canes PROUD! And for those who see someone walking by with a cane, give a smile -- chances are most of us can still somewhat see you, and it means the world to have society's support.

Much love to you all - Katey
